New! Photo Editing Software at HAPL

The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library would like to announce that we now have photo editing software on our public computers!

Our public computers now offer two choices of photo editing software for our patrons to use. The first is Gimp, which has been installed directly onto the computers. This program is more involved and not necessarily for first time users, but if you’d like to teach yourself we have also installed a link to the Gimp tutorials. Give it a try!

The second program is Pixlr, which is an online photo editor. This one is a little simpler, and easier to learn and use. The link to Pixlr has also been installed on the public computers’ desktops.

Both programs are free to use and both offer great photo editing tools. Enjoy!

Summer Reading: Help the Library Win 50 Free Books!

DOGObooks logo

From OCLC WebJunction:

DOGObooks.com, the largest website dedicated to kids’ reading and book reviews by-and-for children, rewards kids, schools, and public libraries for reading and reviewing books. The four-month, online DOGObooks Summer Reading program launched in mid-May, runs through the end of September, and is a great opportunity for young readers.

With the help of its children’s book publisher partners, DOGObooks has assembled an online catalog of popular titles of books for grades 3-8. By reading and posting three reviews of 25 words or more on DOGObooks, kids will receive their choice of a free book from a prize list of titles selected from the leaders in children’s publishing. With more than 3,500 books available, participating children have a good chance to win at least one book. Better World Books is also awarding a 20% coupon to reviewers, plus a prize of 50 books each for the top ten schools with the most reviews.

In addition to choosing their school, for the very first year, participating readers will also be able to choose their local public library. The top ten libraries in the reading challenge will each win 50 books for their collections!

The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library wants you and your child(ren) to help us win 50 free books (and win a free book for themselves)! The more participants we have, the better our chances of winning! If your child is interested, please follow the instructions below to sign them up for DOGObooks Summer Reading program. Don’t forget to have your child choose our Library when they sign up!

This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Children from birth through high school are invited to participate, with weekly incentive prizes and many special guest programs. Summer Reading is fun, focuses on reading for pleasure, and is very important to help keep reading skills strong during the time that school is not in session. Signup sheets are available in the Children’s Room. This free program runs June 29 through August 14.

**Patrons can also click on the “Summer Reading” tab under the “Children” heading in our menu, or on the Summer Reading button in our sidebar, to access printable signup sheets for this program.

Please email Miss Melanie for more information or if you have any questions about our Summer Reading program.

Help Form and Transform Lives

Dear Friends,

“This is nice!” We hear that often these days, from first-time visitors to our brand new building.

YOUR brand new building! We are your public library, now located next to the Hollidaysburg Area High School after 43 years at our previous site. We have been enjoying our new home since last July.

Visitors have found so much to like: generous parking, easy access for disabled patrons, and a soaring entry. New computers, pleasant lighting, and handsome shelves. Relaxed reading areas, private meeting rooms, and beautiful bathrooms! Engaging displays of local interest and vintage photos. The colorful children’s area and the separate young adult room. A well-equipped kitchen and large community room with theater-quality projection and sound. And a charming gazebo and outdoor amphitheater–the latter with a fun secret that you must experience!

You can be proud of your public library. Please visit often with friends and loved ones. Enjoy the materials and programs for all ages. Snap pictures. Show off the place to out-of-town guests!

The beauty of the building is fitting for its purpose. The library exists to help form and transform lives. From infants viewing their first books…to students needing reference help…to seniors in seminars…plus residents using circulated items at home…the library serves and enriches hundreds every day. Since the new site opened, circulation has already increased by 20%.

Our community is fortunate. All of this came from hundreds of supporters over dozens of years. Ongoing support is vital, as it was in the previous building. Over half of our operating funding comes from one local friend at a time. You know the satisfaction from your past donations, or you can feel it by donating for the first time. Any gift you send benefits everyone in our community. If you’d like to donate to the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, please click on the Donate button below, or download and print the PDF file to mail your donation directly to the Library.

These are beautiful things: The new building. The lives touched. And your giving. Thank you for your help. For any questions, please call (814) 695-5961 or email janet@halibrary.org.
