The Friends of the Library’s used book sale will be taking place on April 10-13.

Tuesday, April 10 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm is the Friends Preview Sale, and you must be a member of the Friends to attend. You can buy your membership at the door, though! Dues are $10 per year.

Wednesday and Thursday, April 11 and 12, the sale will run from 9:30am to 7:30 pm. Friday, April 13, the sale will run from 9:30am to 3:00pm and it’s bag day! Fill a bag with books for $5!

Tickets are on sale at the library for our Texas Hold’em Tournament Fundraiser taking place on April 13 at 6:30pm. Tickets bought in advance are eligible for door prizes at the event!

The $30 buy-in gets you 20,000 chips, and each $5 add-on gets you 5,000 chips.

Doug’s Dawgs refreshments will be available for purchase at the event.

And don’t forget to let Chili’s do the cooking! Pick up a flyer at the library, dine out at the Chili’s restaurant in Altoona between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, present the flyer to your server, and the library receives 10% of the pre-tax sale.

Join a Book Club!

Would you like a group of like-minded people to discuss books with? Join one of the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library’s book clubs! We have four different book clubs here at the library that discuss great books–the Evening Classics Book Club, the Inspirational Book Club, the Mystery & Mayhem Book Club, and the Best of Times Book Club.

The Evening Classics Book Club meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30pm. They will be meeting on Thursday, March 1 to discuss Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad.

The Inspirational Book Club meets on the second Thursday of every month at 6:30pm. On Thursday, February 8 the club will be discussing Truth Stained Lies, written by Terri Blackstock.

The Mystery & Mayhem Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 2pm. On Tuesday, February 13 the club will be getting together to discuss The Marriage Lie, written by Kimberly Belle.

The Best of Times Book Club meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at 2pm. On Thursday, February 22 they will be discussing Commonwealth, written by Ann Patchett.

The books being discussed are available for purchase at the library, and every book club provides good conversation and snacks. Join us!

Celebrate Brain Awareness: December 5 at 6:00pm

Learn more about the functions of our brains with Dr. Shlomit Flaisher-Grinberg, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Saint Francis University!

Brain Awareness Week is March 12-18, 2018, but you can learn all about the brain by coming to the library on Tuesday, December 5 at 6:00pm. Dr. Shlomit Flaisher-Grinberg will show and tell us about the functions of our brains, including hands-on activities demonstrating how we learn, see, hear, and taste.

This free program is geared for ages 8-14, but all are welcome to attend. No signup is needed. Cameras are welcome. Live animals will be present as part of this program.

Meet Libby, OverDrive’s New eReading App

Meet Libby, a new app built with love for readers to discover and enjoy eBooks and audiobooks from your library. Inspired by user and library feedback, Libby was designed to get people reading as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

This new eReading app from OverDrive was built as an easier, more one-touch option for eBook readers. If your device doesn’t support Libby, don’t worry! You can still use the existing OverDrive app on those devices.

June 19 through August 12:  Build A Better World

Children of all ages are invited to join this free Summer Learning Program.  Signup sheets are available at the Library, on our Facebook page, and in printable .pdf format linked at the bottom of this page.

Preschool children (infant to age 5/pre-K):  Family “read-to-me” program, with an optional story time OR special guest program time held on Wednesdays at 4pm, Wednesdays at 6:00 pm, Thursdays at 10:30am, or Fridays at 10:30am.

Finished Kindergarten through Finished Fourth Grade:  Independent reading program, with an optional story and craft group activity OR special guest program held on Tuesdays at 6:00pm, Wednesdays at 1:00 pm, or Thursdays at 1:00 or 3:00pm.

Finished Fifth or Sixth Grade:  Independent reading program, with an optional group book discussion/craft activity OR special guest program held on Tuesdays at 1:00 or 4:00pm.

Junior and Senior High:  No signup is required.  During the program (June 19 through August 12), check out a book from the Young Adult section, read it, and fill out an opinion card about the book.  The cards are used for weekly prize drawings.

The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library will host various special guests throughout the summer.  These programs are free and open to everyone (you do not have to be in the summer learning program to attend).  Guest program information will be posted in the Library and will be advertised through our website, Facebook, posters, and local newspaper.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.
